Taking Care of Your Tent

Tent Care Tips

Look after your tent and it will repay you with many years of faithful service. Most tent care tips cost you little or nothing except your time and will greatly prolong the life of your tent.

  • Make sure your tent is completely dry before you pack it away. If you need to pack up in the rain, unpack your tent and leave to dry at the earliest possible opportunity.
  • Once you get home, set up the tent and clean it with a mild soap and water solution. Rinse off well and allow the tent to dry before storing.
  • Clean any zippers and poles, especially after camping by the sea or sand. The gritty sand or salt in the sea spray is particularly damaging to zippers and poles.

Using your tent

A little extra care when using your tent can avoid a lot of damage later on.

  • Check the ground for sharp objects before pitching your tent as they can puncture the tent floor.
  • Use a thick piece of plastic sheet under your tent. This should be cut to match the floor area of your tent. This is available from camping stores or builders suppliers.
  • If at all possible, avoid pitching your tent in strong sunlight. This will keep the tent cooler and more comfortable as well as reducing the color fade due to the UV rays.
