Hiking Boots
When it comes to specialized (and expensive) camping and hiking equipment such as hiking boots then you really need to consider what activities you plan to do during your vacation.
If you are simply sightseeing or planning to enjoy a gentle stroll along pathways or gentle trails then a good pair of sports shoes will be ideal. Heavy hiking boots are not necessary.
However if you have any plans to walk for more than a couple of hours or along rougher trails then a good quality pair of hiking boots will protect your feet and make the journey more comfortable.
So what do you look for in a pair of hiking boots?
- Light, strong construction. Avoid work boots with the heavy steel toecaps.
- Support for your ankles which can protect you against twisting and wrenching as you cross rough terrain.
- A good, comfortable fit. Remember that you’ll be walking for some time!
Cotton socks should be avoided when hiking as they soak up and retain moisture resulting in a very uncomfortable trip! And remember that anything that is warm and wet is the ideal breeding ground for bacteria.
