If you plan to travel around during your camping or hiking trip then a good quality compass is an essential part of your kit. Learning how to use one properly will enable you to get the maximum fun out of your camping adventures.

A quality compass has a number of components that make your map reading easier:

• A magnetised needle that points to magnetic north. (pretty obvious!)
• A compass housing that can be rotated to show you the direction you are traveling.
• Markings along the base plate to give you a sense of distance.
• A magnifying glass so that you can zoom in on very fine detail.
